Crandall, Prudence (later Philleo)

(1803–90) educator, abolitionist; born in Hopkinton, R.I. Her short-lived attempt to train young black women as teachers in her Canterbury, Conn., boarding school (1833–34), provoked passage of a local "black law" and harassment ranging from arrest to violent attacks. Crandall worked for women's rights and temperance throughout her life.
