Location:On north Key Largo, Florida, off Card Sound Road.
Activities:Educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge contains some of the Keys' last remaining stands of high tropical hardwood hammock.
Habitats: 6,606 acres of tropical hardwood hammock, mangrove forests, manmade channels, and open water.
Access: Closed to general public use, although limited special-use permits may be obtained.
Wild life: Endangered species include American crocodile, Schaus' swallowtail butterfly, Key Largo woodrat, and Key Largo cotton mouse.

Britta Muiznieks is a fish and wildlife biologist at the Service's South Florida Ecological Services Office, Key Largo Sub-office (co-located at the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge), Florida.
After learning of AMERICAN FORESTS' Big Tree program a few years ago, he quickly located 14 new champions, all within the boundaries of his park and the adjacent Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This combined area has the largest tracts of subtropical West Indian hardwood hammock in the United States.
In addition to Turkey Point, crocodiles nest in two other areas in South Florida: the southern mainland portion of Everglades National Park and northern Key Largo, where they are protected by the 6,600-acre Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1980.
