A family of proglyphodont venomous snakes in the reptilian suborder Serpentes.

According to Fougera, crotalid is used to describe the Crotalinae subfamily (formerly Crotalidae) of venomous snakes that comprise the vast majority of common North American snakes--including rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths/water moccasins.
