Cunningham Falls State Park
Location:In Frederick County, 15 miles north of Frederick. Park has 2 main
developed areas: the Manor Area is located on the west side of US 15
at Thurmont; the William Houck Area is 3 miles west of Thurmont, off
Route 77, on Catoctin Hollow Road.
Facilities:171 improved campsites (some with electric hookups), 9 camper cabins,
bathhouses with showers and flush toilets, camp store, picnic areas,
shelter, food concession, hiking trails, fishing pier (é), boat launch, canoe and rowboat
rental, playground, historic site (é).
Activities:Camping, boating, flatwater canoeing, freshwater fishing, swimming, hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing.
Special Features:Cunningham Falls, for which the park is named, is a 78-foot cascading
waterfall in a rocky gorge, located in the Houck Area of the park. Of
historic interest is the Catoctin Iron Furnace, which operated from 1776 until 1903. A segment of the
2,144-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through the park
(see entry in national trails section).
