Buysse, Cyriel

 

Born Sept. 21, 1859, in Nivelles; died July 25, 1932, in Deurne. Belgian author.

Buysse wrote in Flemish and was one of the editors of the literary periodical Van nu en straks. He promoted the revival and originality of Flemish literature. His work was influenced by naturalism and later by neoromanticism.

Buysse was the author of the novels The Right of the Strong (1893), The Life of Rozeke van Dalen (1906), The Aunts (1925), The Pillory (1928), and Two Worlds (1932); the play The Family of Paemel (1903); and other works. The main theme of his works is the life of the Belgian peasants.
