DECnet (see Table IV) is a proprietary protocol suite from Digital Equipment Corporation.
The communications software includes RAF,
DECNET, ALISATALK, and LAT.
Beyond the compatibility of the various VAX computers, the Intelligent Newspaper will rely on a
DECnet network backbone.
To adapt ForComment for a multi-user market, Access built hooks for
DECNet, 3Com, Novell, and IBM PC Net (the original ForComment relied primarily on sneakernet for collecting editing suggestions), and added automatic document distribution and revision tracking.
The PC-based operator control systems are efficient and cost-effective, and can be networked to a VAX computer using
Decnet for plant-wide data management operations.
Equally important, Digital chose to put key suppliers into its worldwide distributed computing network,
DECnet. These suppliers "were treated as if they were a Digital site," explains Glick, "which helped keep activities coordinated and synchronized."
Commercial networking technologies were being pursued as well, including IBM's SNA, Xerox's XNS, and Digital Equipment Corp.'s
DECNET.
At ORHS, we have a mixture of SNA, TCP/IP, IPX,
DECNET and NETBIOS protocols.
The remote access server supports AppleTalk, IPX, TCP/IP,
DECNet, XNS, LAN Manager and Banyan Vines.
Based on open standards, this network supports multiple protocols, including AppleTalk,
DECnet, IPX/SPX, TCP/IP and X.25.
