DKIM and SPF have been used by a number of companies for several years.
As protocols like SPF, VBR and
DKIM become widely used they increase the likelihood that spam will be detected and that valid mail will make its way safely into the recipients' inboxes.
Currently these proposed authorization schemes are called Sender-ID, and a new scheme called Sender Signer Policy (SSP) that is intended to work with
DKIM. As with Sender-ID, SSP also makes the assumption of being an indirect method of source identification, and even directs complaints to the email address domain owner.
DMARC allows a sender to mark in their e-mails whether they are protected by SPF and/or
DKIM, and notifies the receiver what to do if neither of those authentication methods passes such as send to junk or reject the mail.
"Whether you are an enterprise or offering a consumer service, you can apply this policy now," says Brett McDowell, senior manager of customer security initiatives at PayPal, who is chairman of the organization DMARC, which stands for "Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance." The DMARC.org site today published guidelines and the specification for its technology, which makes use of the well known standards Sender Policy Framework (SPF)and Domain Keys Identified Mail (
DKIM), two basic approaches widely used today for authenticating email.
Almost a decade after the industry last set out to solve the problem with DomainKeys Identified Mail (
DKIM)and Microsoft's Sender Policy Framework(SPF, later called Sender ID), DMARC's arrival is an acceptance that these have not been enough.
Lyris Inc (OTCBB:LYRI.OB), a company that provides marketing technology solutions, said on 21 October that DomainKeys Identified Mail (
DKIM) technology was available within the Lyris HQ online marketing suite.
A draft standard of the DomainKeys Identified Mail (
DKIM) system, which validates an e-mail sender's identity, has been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an industry body which represents companies such as Cisco, Yahoo and Sendmail.
