Daqiqi

(Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn Ahmed). Year of birth unknown; died circa 977. Persian and Tadzhik poet. Of Daqiqi’s writings, one long qasida, some lyric poetry, and chapters from his Shah Nama (988 couplets), which were later included in the epic poem of the same name by Firdausi, have been preserved. Daqiqi was a representative of the shu’ubiyah movement, which expressed the striving for independence from the caliphate by means of the glorification of native traditions and customs. Daqiqi’s poetry is distinguished by its picturesque quality and abundance of metaphors.

If the rhetoric was established as Ferdowsi wrote the mythological and legendary sections, largely perhaps from oral sources or from contemporary verse works (for instance, those of Daqiqi) that drew on such sources, it would have become an instrument that the poet was then able to use when, later in the composition of the poem, he was versifying the written sources of much of the Sasanian section.
