Storage device in addition to the main storage of a computer; for example, magnetic tape, disk, or magnetic drum. Also known as auxiliary memory.

auxiliary storage

(1) Storage outside the computer case. The term may refer to storage that is part of the computer, such as an external hard drive, or to an array of stand-alone drives that are independently controlled. See external storage, storage array, NAS and SAN.

(2) One or more internal storage drives in addition to the primary hard drive or SSD in the computer. See storage and storage array.
