Lean, David

Born Mar. 25, 1908, in Croydon. British motion-picture director; joined the industry in 1928.

Lean directed (with N. Coward) his first film, In Which We Serve (Soviet title, Story of a Ship), in 1942; the influence of documentary cinematography is noticeable in the film. His Brief Encounter (1945) was a high point of British cinematography. A director of realist tendencies, Lean reveals the character of his heroes against a background of dramatic, predominantly military, events. His other films include Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948) (screen versions of the Dickens’ novels), Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1961), and Ryan’s Daughter (1970).
