Davies, Samuel

Davies, Samuel

(1723–61) Protestant clergyman, educator; born in New Castle County, Del. Ordained in 1747, he led the Great Awakening revival in Virginia, where he became a stout defender of the freedom of religious sects from the authority of the colony's established church. He attracted a large following as a preacher, and his sermons were widely published. In 1759 he succeeded Jonathan Edwards as president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) and served there until his death.
