Davis Sea

 

an outlying sea of the Indian Ocean, washing the Coast of Pravda in Antarctica (between 87° and 98° E long.). With depths ranging to 1,300 m, it is icebound year round. Its salinity measures 33.0-33.5 parts per thousand. The island of Drygalski is located in the sea. The Soviet Mirnyi Antarctic Station was built on the shore of Davis Sea in 1956. Discovered in 1912 by an Australian expedition headed by D. Mawson, it was named in honor of J. K. Davis, captain of the expedition ship Aurora.
