Degaussing of a Ship

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Degaussing of a Ship

a procedure used to artificially change the magnetic field of a ship in order to reduce the probability that it will be blown up by magnetic or magnetic-induction mines.

A ship is degaussed by means of stationary demagnetization devices, whose main elements are special coils mounted directly on the ship and designed to compensate the magnetic field. Ships and vessels that do not have demagnetization devices undergo periodic degaussing at stationary or mobile demagnetization stations, where, after exposure to a demagnetizing external magnetic field, the ship’s intrinsic magnetic field is reduced to the required level.
