Delmonico, Lorenzo

Delmonico, Lorenzo

(1813–81) restaurateur; born in Marengo, Switzerland. He came to New York in 1832, opening the first of a number of successful restaurants that introduced European standards to New Yorkers. Delmonico's offered fresh foods, a large menu, and long hours, widely copied innovations that promoted a restaurant culture in American cities.
