Established: 1935.
Location:1 mile west of Kenmare, North Dakota.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, observation blind, picnic areas, auto tour route, trails.
Activities:Canoeing, fishing, hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing.
Special Features:The refuge is a 28-mile-long river valley with three natural lakes. Early trappers originally called this area "Riviere des Lacs," literally, "River of the Lakes," which aptly describes its prominent features. The refuge is well known for spectacular snow goose populations of 200,000 to 300,000 in the fall.
Habitats: 19,544 acres of marshes, lakes, grasslands, and woodlands.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: Western grebes, American white pelican, Canada geese, short eared owl, deer, and occasional moose.
