Dispatch Boat

(in Russian, avizo), small military craft, relatively fast, used in certain foreign fleets (French, Italian, Spanish) up until the early 20th century for reconnaissance purposes, messenger duty, and miscellaneous missions. Special dispatch boats were not built in the Russian fleet; instead, obsolete torpedo boats, light cruisers, and other vessels were used for these duties.
