Dzhanelidze, Dmitrii Sevast’evich

 

Born Apr. 26 (May 9), 1906, in Kutaisi. Soviet theatrical scholar. Honored Art Worker of the Georgian SSR (1958), Doctor of the Arts (1965).

In 1931, Dzhanelidze began conducting research and teaching at various research institutes and acting studios. He also worked at Sh. Rustaveli Theatrical Institute in Tbilisi, becoming a professor there in 1966. He is the author of The First Soviet Stage Performance (1936), The Kote Mardzhanishvili Georgian State Drama Theater (1958, written in collaboration with E. Gugushvili), The Georgian Theater From Ancient Times to the Second Half of the 19th Century (1959), History of the Georgian Theater (vol. 1, 1966), Sakhioba (vols. 1-2, 1958-72), and other works devoted to Georgian playwrights, actors, and stage designers. Dzhanelidze has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
