San Sebastián

a city and port in northern Spain, in the Basque region; situated on the Bay of Biscay, at the mouth of the Urumea River. Capital of the province of Guipúzcoa. Population, 165,800 (1970).

San Sebastián’s various industries produce machines, chemicals, paper, textiles, cement, and food. The city also has a fishing industry. The sand beach that stretches along the picturesque bay has made San Sebastián a well-known summer resort; in addition to a substantial tourist trade, the city periodically hosts international film festivals.
