In data mining, viewing data at a greater level of detail; for example, viewing individual sales as opposed to viewing total sales.

drill down

(database)
(Or "drill-down analysis") To examine data in greater detail, especially, in reporting, to interactively select some item from a summary and display the data that contributed to that item, broken down by some extra parameter.

For example, when viewing your company's total worldwide sales for each month of this year, you might drill down to see October's sales by country, then again to see October's sales in Afghanistan by product and so on.

This kind of analysis is often supported by some kind of data warehouse.

drill down

To move from summary information to the detailed data that created it. For example, adding totals from all the orders for a year creates gross sales for the year. Drilling down would identify the types of products that were most popular. The ability to drill down can be performed in a single application or by using a combination of applications.
