"Over the past few years,
Dumbo has received substantial investment and has really transformed from a traditional industrial neighborhood to a 24/7 live-work-play destination and an attractive alternative to Manhattan," said Roeschlaub.
"For
Dumbo to die whilst under the so-called 'care' and 'treatment' of the zoo shows just how neglected these animals are in captivity.
Unlike many Tim Burton movies those faces are a little more diverse here, but
Dumbo definitely falls into the trap of a period piece that follows outdated tropes rather than subverting them, with a Black strongman, an Indian mystic, and a funny fat woman who are all (a very small) part of the Medici Brothers Circus.
"
Dumbo is the quintessential outsider who from his birth - as a result of things that are beyond his control, a physical anomaly that he's born with - is ostracised, he's excluded, he's pilloried and maligned and just treated cruelly and separated from his mother against both their wills.
"We pre-judge ourselves before society can ever judge us, and that's why society judging us sometimes hurts so much, because they seem to be in tandem with the judgement we've made already - when all of it is based on illusion." Feeling some kind of isolation is certainly a theme of Tim's other films, including Alice In Wonderland, Big Fish, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride, and it's what drew the veteran American film-maker to
Dumbo.
Farrell plays Holt Farrier, a wounded World War I veteran who along with his children seek to protect
Dumbo from those who would exploit him.
Born with uncommonly large ears, the pachyderm that would eventually be dubbed
Dumbo is born in captivity, the lone offspring of a circus elephant named Mrs.
Like its hand-drawn predecessor,
Dumbo opens with a soaring flock of storks and one of the first creatures to befriend the titular pachyderm is a peanut-chomping mouse in a red ringmaster's outfit.
