Durant, Henry

Durant, Henry

(1802–75) college president; born in Acton, Mass. He left his Congregational ministry in Massachusetts for the California gold rush (1853). He prompted the chartering of the College of California (1855) and was one of its first faculty members; on its reorganization as the University of California (1870), he became its first president.
