(until 1929, Rastiapino), a city (until 1930, a settlement) in Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. Dzerzhinsk was renamed in honor of F. E. Dzerzhinskii. Its railway station is on the Moscow-Gorky line, 32 km to the west of the city of Gorky. It is a landing on the left bank of the Oka River. In 1971 its population was 225,000 (in 1926, 10,000; in 1939, 103,000; and in 1959, 164,000). It is one of the main centers of the chemical industry of the USSR, producing mineral fertilizers, herbicides, and organic synthetics. There are factories producing construction materials, equipment for the chemical industry, rope, and furniture. The food industry is well developed. The city has an evening school branch of the Gorky Polytechnic Institute, chemical and chemical-mechanical technicums, a music school, a drama theater, and a museum of local lore.

Its name was changed in honor of F. E. Dzerzhinskii. In 1970 its population was 47,000. The city has six coal mines. There are plants for coking, concentrating, phenol, and acid-resistant products. The city has a mining technicum and medical and music schools. It was founded in 1810.

Dzerzhinsk has motor repair and mechanical shops and flax, clothing, and textile factories. There is a food industry. Peat-briquette and chalk-limestone plants are located near the city.
