Dzerzhinsk

 

(until 1929, Rastiapino), a city (until 1930, a settlement) in Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. Dzerzhinsk was renamed in honor of F. E. Dzerzhinskii. Its railway station is on the Moscow-Gorky line, 32 km to the west of the city of Gorky. It is a landing on the left bank of the Oka River. In 1971 its population was 225,000 (in 1926, 10,000; in 1939, 103,000; and in 1959, 164,000). It is one of the main centers of the chemical industry of the USSR, producing mineral fertilizers, herbicides, and organic synthetics. There are factories producing construction materials, equipment for the chemical industry, rope, and furniture. The food industry is well developed. The city has an evening school branch of the Gorky Polytechnic Institute, chemical and chemical-mechanical technicums, a music school, a drama theater, and a museum of local lore.

Dzerzhinsk

 

(until 1938, Shcherbinovka), a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Dzerzhinsk is 7 km from the Fenol’naia railway station on the Konstantinovkalasinovataia line. Its name was changed in honor of F. E. Dzerzhinskii. In 1970 its population was 47,000. The city has six coal mines. There are plants for coking, concentrating, phenol, and acid-resistant products. The city has a mining technicum and medical and music schools. It was founded in 1810.


Dzerzhinsk

 

a city (since 1932), the center of Dzerzhinsk Raion, Minsk Oblast, Byelorussian SSR. Its railway station (Kaidanovo) is on the Minsk-Baranovichi line. In 1970 its population was 10,700. Dzerzhinsk has motor repair and mechanical shops and flax, clothing, and textile factories. There is a food industry. Peat-briquette and chalk-limestone plants are located near the city.


Dzerzhinsk

 

(until 1931, Romanov), an urban-type settlement, the center of Dzerzhinsk Raion, Zhitomir Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. It is 11 km from the Razino railway station on the Shepetovka-Berdichev line. There are glass and brick plants and a creamery.
