Dzhalilabad

 

(prior to 1967, Astrakhan-Bazar), a city, the administrative center of Dzhalilabad Raion, Azerbaijan SSR. Located in the northern part of the Lenkoran Lowland, 12 km west of the Novogolovka railroad station. Population, 16,000 (1970). It is the chief town of one of the republic’s major agricultural raions and has a creamery and cheese dairy and a winery. The city was renamed in honor of the Azerbaijani writer Dzhalil’ Mamedkulizade.
