a council area and historical county of E central Scotland, on the Firth of Forth and the North Sea: part of Lothian region from 1975 to 1996: chiefly agricultural. Administrative centre: Haddington. Pop.: 91 090 (2003 est.). Area: 678 sq. km (262 sq. miles)
