Eastern newt eft.--Newt efts exposed to kairomones from predatory opossums produced an unken display with significantly greater intensity than newt efts exposed only to a dechlorinated water control (t = -2.47, P = 0.02, Fig.
An investigation into tetrodoloxin (ttx) levels associated with the red dorsal spots in eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) efts and adults.

The only salamander that did not respond to the opossum kairomones with predator avoidance behavior were adult Eastern newts. Adult newts are aquatic and while they have been documented responding to kairomones from aquatic predators (Chapman et al, 2017), the potential for interaction between terrestrial opossums and the aquatic adults is likely limited.
Only fear the fatal foe: predation risk assessment by eastern newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) in response to common snapping turtles and other potential predators.

Eastern newts were collected from Mountain Lake Biological Station, Pembroke, Virginia, in 2015 under Virginia Scientific Collection Permit #054260.
Our study shows that the red dorsal spots do not contain elevated TTX concentrations relative to areas lacking these spots in eft nor adult Eastern newts. There is extreme variability in the number of red spots in this species [16, 24], with efts in our study possessing between 3 and 14 spots.
Based on the results from the ANOVA (Table 6), mole salamanders, southern toads and eastern newts have significantly more days [year.sup.-1] of surface activity in the hardwood forest than in the pine forests.
