Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

the go vernment-funded agency that provides grants for social research. Formerly the Social Science Research Council, the change of name was at the behest of a government minister, Sir Keith Joseph, who was unhappy with the appropriateness of the term 'S cience’, and also anxious to focus on more economically relevant applied issues in social research.
