The CaSSIS view shows InSight as a slightly brighter dot in the centre of the dark patch produced when the lander fired its retro rockets just before touchdown in the
Elysium Planitia region of Mars, and disturbed the surface dust.
As a member of the Council of Terrains team, he has also helped select the site for safe landing in the equatorial region of Mars,
Elysium Planitia, in a process that lasted four years.
Last month, the InSight lander, which will sample the planet's interior, successfully touched down at
Elysium Planitia.
NASA chose
Elysium Planitia for InSight's landing site because it's remarkably flat.
The $993 million lander arrived Monday at its target, a lava plain named
Elysium Planitia, for a two-year mission aimed at better understanding how Earth's neighboring planet formed.
The winning candidate is a spot in western
Elysium Planitia at 4.5[degrees] north latitude and 135.9[degrees] east longitude.
With InSight's landing at
Elysium Planitia, NASA has successfully soft-landed a vehicle on the Red Planet eight times.
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, California -- After travelling 300 million miles through the solar system, Nasa's InSight spacecraft descended through the Martian sky on Monday and touched down safely on the smooth surface of
Elysium Planitia shortly before noon Pacific time.
InSight arrived on Mars's
Elysium Planitia area north of its equator, described as an ideal spot for its flat, rockless surface.
The InSight will operate out of the
Elysium Planitia on Mars, and is powered by twin solar arrays, that are about seven feet wide.
