Epifanii Premudryi

 

(Epifanii the Wise). Year of birth unknown: died 1420. Russian writer and monk.

Epifanii spent more than 30 years at the St. Sergius Trinity Monastery. His Life of Stefan of Perm’, written shortly after 1396, the year Stefan died, is concerned with the bishop of Perm’, who was the educator of the Komi and the creator of the ancient Permian alphabet. In 1417–18, Epifanii worked on his Life of Sergii ofRadonezh, founder of St. Sergius Trinity Monastery. Both works are typical examples of 14th- and 15th-century hagiology. Epifanii the Wise appears also to have authored the introduction to the Tver’ Chronicle, the letter to Abbot Kirill of Tver’, and Epifanii’s Tale of the Journey to the Holy City of Jerusalem.
