Established: 1959.
Location:35 miles south of Erie in northwestern Pennsylvania.
Facilities:Visitor center (é), viewing sites, trails, auto tour route, historic features, fishing dock (é), indoor bird viewing room with microphones to hear the birds.
Activities:Fishing, hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, educational programs.
Special Features:Erie NWR is the only refuge in the nation protecting endangered Northern riffleshell and clubshell mussels. It has also been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon society.
Habitats: 8,777 acres consisting of beaver ponds, pools, marshland, and forested slopes interspersed with croplands, grasslands, and wet meadows.
Access: Open from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Black ducks, wood ducks, hooded mergansers, blue-winged teal, mallards, beaver, woodchuck, and white-tailed deer.
