Erodium

storksbill, a genus of plants of the family Geraniaceae. Plants of the genus Erodium are annual or perennial herbs, usually opposite-leaved, mostly pinnate or pinnatisect, or, less frequently, divided or lobate. There are more than 80 species, mainly in the temperate regions in Eurasia and the Mediterranean area. In the USSR there are about 20 species. The most common is the short annual E. cicutarium. The lobes of the mature theciform fruit (the so-called sterigmata) have spirally decurved lower sections; as they absorb moisture, they curl and dig into the ground.
