Etesian Wind

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Etesian Wind

a north wind in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent coastal regions. Etesian winds, which are prevalent between April and October, arise because of the formation of a temperature depression above the hot lands of Southwest Asia. They are associated with clear weather, because the air masses that they bring from higher latitudes become heated over the warm Mediterranean Sea region and the relative humidity of the air in the masses decreases.

Some have such a vast appetite for the former commodity, that is, the news, and such sound digestive organs, that they can sit forever in public avenues without stirring, and let it simmer and whisper through them like the Etesian winds, or as if inhaling ether, it only producing numbness and insensibility to pain -- otherwise it would often be painful to bear -- without affecting the consciousness.
The Greek and Latin historians do not speak favourably of it, and Strabo says it is very dangerous during the Etesian winds and in the rainy season.
