Born Apr. 1, 1920, in Tyrgovishte. Bulgarian economist; statesman; public figure; academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1967). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) since 1944.
Mateev has been a member of the Central Committee of the BCP since 1962. He was chairman of the State Planning Committee in 1951-52 and chairman of the Central Board of Statistics of Bulgaria from 1953 to 1960; since 1963 he has been a minister. His main works deal with the political economy of socialism, planning, and the history of economic thought. He was awarded the Dimitrov Prize in 1962.
