an island in the Baltic Sea, part of SE Denmark. Chief town: Nyk?bing. Pop.: 43 537 (2003 est.). Area: 513 sq. km (198 sq. miles)

Falster

 

a Danish island in the western Baltic Sea, in the southeastern Danish Archipelago. Population, 46,500 (1966). Falster has an area of 514 sq km; elevations range from below sea level to 44 m. The surface of the island is a hilly morainic plain with meadows and small broad-leaved forests. Falster is joined by bridges to the nearby islands of Sjaelland and Lolland; the bridge to Sjaelland is 3.2 km long. Sugar beets and grains are grown, and dairy cattle are raised on the island. The city of Nyk0bing Falster is located there.
