Established: 1969.
Location:Off the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula, 14 miles south of Cape Charles.
Special Features:Because there are no mammalian predators, the island provides protection for such species and brown pelican and royal terns.
Habitats: 1,850-acre barrier island consisting of brackish marsh, beach, and upland.
Access: Guided tours available by reservation on weekends between October and March. No other public access.
Wild life: Waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds, and raptors, including peregrine falcons and bald eagles. Other species include the sea turtle and tiger beetle.
