Fort Cooper State Park
Location:Off US 41 on South Old Floral City Road, 2 miles south of Inverness.
Facilities:Primitive tent campsite, nature trails, picnic
areas/pavilions (including one that accommodates up to 70 people),
canoe and paddleboat rentals (private boats prohibited), playground, recreation hall.
Activities:Camping, canoeing, freshwater fishing, swimming, hiking, wildlife viewing, birding.
Special Features:In 1836 the First Georgia Battalion of Volunteers built a stockade
here, enabling the soldiers to withstand several skirmishes with
Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola. Today many of the activities at
the park center around Lake Holathlikaha, and a new 2,300-foot long multi-use paved
trail makes the park a major trailhead
for access to the Withlacoochee State Trail. The park is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail.
