Fort Jesup State Historic Site
Location:In Sabine Parish, 6 miles east of Many on LA 6.
Facilities:Historic buildings, picnic area, visitor's center with exhibits, restrooms, and gift shop.
Activities:Guided tours, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Colonel Zachary Taylor established and commanded the garrison at Fort
Jesup, which was built as a border outpost in 1822. Taylor's troops
established law and order in the area, and Fort Jesup remained an
important military post for nearly 25 years. The original kitchen/mess
hall is the only historic structure remaining from the large
reservation that once spread across the frontier. The reconstructed
officers' quarters building now houses the site's visitor center. In
1961, Fort Jesup was designated a National Historic Landmark
