Fort-Shevchenko

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction in Mangyshlak Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Fort Shevchenko is located on Cape Tiub-Karagan, on Mangyshlak Peninsula. A port on the Caspian Sea, the city has a fish-processing combine. Coquina is extracted in the area. Fort-Shevchenko was founded in 1846 as the fortification Novopetrovskoe. It was renamed Fort-Aleksandrovskii in 1857. In 1939 it was given its present name in honor of T. G. Shevchenko, who had been in exile there from 1850 to 1857. The Shevchenko Memorial Museum and a museum of local lore are in the city.
