Fortifications

 

structures designed for the concealment and the most effective use of weaponry, materiel, and control posts; they are also used to protect troops, civilians, and objectives in the rear from destruction by the enemy. A distinction is made between field and permanent fortifications. The science of fortification (see) deals with the development of structural components and with methods of constructing and using field and permanent fortifications.
