WHEN soldiers of Company C, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Hood, Texas, received M1A2 tanks in September 2002, the Army's newest
forward-looking infrared system was built in.
But those tragic deaths merely foreshadowed the hideous events of April 19th: The prolonged gassing of the Davidians' church complex by the FBI; the ensuing fire that enveloped the complex; and the horrifying spectacle--captured on
forward-looking infrared tape--of federal paramilitaries directing automatic weapons fire into the burning complex, cutting off avenues of possible retreat.
As if that wasn't complicated enough, in the middle of the project, they decided they wanted to add a
forward-looking infrared sensor to provide images at night and during adverse weather conditions.
Because thermal anomalies reveal surface pollution, the team fitted a helicopter with a flir (

forward-looking infrared camera (FLIR), which locates hot spots on an aircraft and enables a driver to respond to an emergency even in low visibility conditions.
The upgrade includes installation of the improved thermal sight system 2nd generation
forward-looking infrared radar, spare and repair parts, test equipment, personnel training and training equipment and other related elements of programme support.
The CROWS sensor suite includes a daytime video camera, a second-generation
forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sight, and a laser range finder for day and night missions.
