Foss, Joseph

Foss, Joseph (Jacob)

(1915–  ) marine aviator, governor; born in Sioux Falls, S.D. He led the marine Fighting Squadron 121—"Joe's Flying Circus"—on Guadalcanal Island during heavy fighting there in 1942, and shot down a total of 26 Japanese aircraft. He served as governor of South Dakota from 1955 to 1959.
