The whales continued southward and entered Hudson Strait, where contact with the tags was lost in
Foxe Basin. Thirty-six whales provided data on horizontal velocity and daily average velocity, which ranged between 0.11 and 0.51 ms-1 with an average of 0.32 [ms.sup.-1] (SD = 0.11).
The scientists estimated that taking one whale every three years from
Foxe Basin and one every 19 years from Baffin Bay won't hurt the whale populations there.
Regional patterns in FA composition could not be investigated, given the small sample size for all regions except northern
Foxe Basin. A PCA reduced the 15 FAs to three uncorrelated principal components (PCs), retaining 89% of the total variance (Table 3).
The majority of interviewees with a conflicted opinion of killer whales were found in the Baffin regions (9 of 12, 5 in North Baffin, 4 in South Baffin), whereas the majority of interviewees with a positive opinion were in the
Foxe Basin and Hudson Bay regions (12 of 16, including 9 from Hudson Bay).
From 1963 to 1974, Hans directed his attention toward the Paleozoic of the Arctic Platform of northwestern Baffin Island and
Foxe Basin and the Triassic tar sands on Melville Island.
Damkjar (2000:178) suggests they may have originated in Ungava, where they are particularly abundant (Plumet, 1982), although with semisubterranean precursors in
Foxe Basin, and Murray (1999:476-477) likewise suggests a
Foxe Basin origin from semisubterranean precursors.
As an AINA Research Associate, Ken will be studying the geology, geography, archaeology, and history of Prince Charles Island and Air Force Island in
Foxe Basin. These two islands were unknown until they were accidentally discovered by the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1948.
The greatest trend to earlier sea-ice breakup was found to occur in western Hudson Bay, with lesser trends in
Foxe Basin and Baffin Bay.
The
Foxe Basin population appears to comprise two stocks (North
Foxe Basin and Central
Foxe Basin) rather than one.
Images from
Foxe Basin showing walrus and polar bears only hint at the broader texture of a polar bear's life, and greater geographic and ecological coverage would have been welcome.
However, in four populations--Western Hudson Bay,
Foxe Basin, Baffin Bay, and Davis Strait (Fig.
The former habitat is abundant along the coast of Hudson Bay and in
Foxe Basin, both areas where human contact is exceedingly low, but gulls have occasionally been observed during the breeding season (Alvo et al., 1996; Bechet et al., 2000).
