Gabrovo is an important center of light industry (textile, leather-goods, and footwear enterprises) and machine building (textile machinery, metal-cutting machine tools, instruments, and electrical telphers). The food and furniture indus-tries are also represented, as well as tourism (hiking trips to the Stara Planina, Shipka Pass, and so on). Fruit orchards and forests are located in the city’s environs. National comedy festivals are held annually in Gabrovo.
