Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail
Location:Starts on SE 15th Street in Gainesville and extends to Hawthorne near US 301.
Facilities:Paved trail.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, horseback riding.
Special Features:Trail stretches from Boulware Springs Park in Gainesville through Paynes Prairie State Preserve and the Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area into downtown Hawthorne. It was built on a historic railroad line established in 1850 which was important in the founding and history of Gainesville. The 21,000-acre Paynes Prairie State Preserve (see separate entry) offers additional off-road bicycle trails.
