Yellow Bar Hassock is part of a marsh island complex located in the 26-square-mile Jamaica Bay Park and Wildlife Refuge that was the country's first national urban park and one of the
Gateway National Recreation Areas. The refuge is in an urban area that includes portions of Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau Counties, New York.
ON STORMY DAYS, the wind at the tip of Sandy Hook, a former military base now turned into the bustling
Gateway National Recreation Area, is enough to knock you down, and it churns the Atlantic into a froth favored by surfers but anathema to the embattled homeowners on this exposed coast.
Back in New York, as a National Park Service ranger at the
Gateway National Recreation Area (the nation's first urban park), he enjoyed teaching city youngsters about the natural world.
We won a silver award for overall travel coverage (in non-travel magazines) and a bronze award in the environmental tourism category for Rona Kobell's article, "A Campsite Grows in Brooklyn," about
Gateway National Recreation Area. We also won several other national awards recently: The magazine received honorable mention for best niche product in the Society for Features Journalism 2017 Excellence-ln-Features Awards.
For the public, this means less erosion to personal property, more species available for recreational fisheries, better water quality, and the preservation of the
Gateway National Recreation Area that is visited by millions of people each year.
At the southern edge of Jamaica Bay, a ten-thousand-acre ecosystem of salt marshes, tidal creeks, beaches and islands at the entrance of New York harbor, hundreds of volunteers raise native trees, shrubs and plants to increase biodiversity in the challenging urban environments of
Gateway National Recreation Area. Launched by the Friends of Gateway nearly three years ago, the Gateway Greenhouse Education Center is helping to turn Floyd Bennett Field, NYC's first municipal airport, into a public space that includes extensive wildlife habitat and the return of native plant communities.
The Service alerted National Park Service staff at the nearby Sandy Hook Unit of the
Gateway National Recreation Area and recommended surveys.
Other include San Francisco's Golden Gate National Recreation Area,
Gateway National Recreation Area in New York and New Jersey and Atlanta's Chattahoochee River Recreation Area.
Gateway National Recreation Area includes three units that straddle two states and three New York City boroughs.
While there, the Selected Artists will use the beach club resources to create work inspired by the landscape and surrounds of the
Gateway National Recreation Area, part of the National Park system.
