Giant City State Park
Location:Southern Illinois, in the hills of the Shawnee National Forest (see entry in the national forests chapter) near Carbondale.
Facilities:Class A campground with water, electricity, showers, and sanitary
facilities for tent or trailer camping, Class A equestrian campground
near the park's horse trail, 14 primitive walk-in sites; lodge with 34
cabins, restaurant, lounge, swimming pool, children's pool; picnic
areas and shelters, playgrounds; hiking trails, equestrian trails,
horse stables, fishing ponds; visitor center with gift shop, natural
and cultural exhibits, and discovery corner for children.
Activities:Camping, boating (10 HP limit), canoeing, fishing, hiking,
horseback riding, hunting, rock climbing, interpretive
programs.
Special Features:The name "Giant City" is derived from an area in the park where unique
impressions have been made by massive sandstone structures. Formed
12,000 years ago, the huge sandstone bluffs have created walls so
precise they seem almost manmade, with sections that appear to form
streets or alleys for a city of giants.
