Goltsovo

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Gol’tsovo

(Gol’tsovoe), a lake on the northern island of Novaia Zemlia in Arkhangel’sk Oblast, RSFSR, covering an area of 55.8 sq km. The long, narrow lake is situated in a depression extending from the western shore (at Krestovaia Guoa) to the eastern (Medvezhii Gulf). Glaciers flow into it from the north, and although the lake is fed by a number of different sources, glacial alimentation predominates. The Severnaia Krestovaia River flows out of Lake Gol’tsovo to the Krestovaia inlet. There are colonies of birds on the lake shores.
