Grand Portage State Park

Parks Directory of the United States / State Parks / Minnesota

Location:On the US/Canada border, 36 miles north of the town of Grand Marais on Highway 61.
Facilities:Hiking trails (4 miles), wheelchair-accessible trail (0.75 miles), snowshoe rentals, picnic area, historic site, visitor center (é), interpretive exhibits, gift shop.
Activities:Hiking, snowshoeing, picnicking.
Special Features:A boardwalk trail leads to an overlook of Minnesota's highest waterfall and the steep gorge into which the Pigeon River plunges. The falls presented a serious obstacle to river travel, so a "carrying place," or portage, was necessary, and American Indians created the ancient nine-mile trail from Lake Superior to bypass the falls. This trail became known as "The Grand Portage." The park lies within Grand Portage Indian Reservation and is bordered by Canada on the north and east. Lake Superior is about one mile east of the park.
