Greenock

 

a city and port in Scotland, on the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde, in Renfrewshire. Population, 71,900 (1967). It is an outer harbor for Glasgow. Greenock has a shipbuilding industry and other branches of machine building and a food-processing industry, including sugar refining. Woolen and knit goods are produced in the city. Raw sugar is the main import, and machines are the main export. Greenock is the hometown of J. Watt, the inventor of the steam engine.
