a state in Mexico. Area, 30,600 sq km. Population, 2.300,000 (1970). Located on the southern Mexican upland, in the basin of the upper Lerma River. Its administrative center is the city of Guanajuato. It is largely a region of subsistence agriculture (corn and kidney beans). In the basin of the Lerma, centering on Leon, is the commercial agricultural region of Bahio, where corn and wheat are grown and livestock are raised. Industry includes food processing, textiles, and shoes and leather in León and Irapuato and petroleum refining in Salamanca.

A branch line connects it with the Mexico City-Torreón railroad line. Guanajuato is an old center of a mining region (gold and silver), which has greatly declined in significance. A food and condiment industry and some others are located in Guanajuato.
