HED meteorites were first connected with Vesta in the 1970s, when scientists noted their infrared and visible spectra were similar to the asteroid's.
The image above shows three slices of HED meteorites as viewed through a polarizing microscope.
Evidence for dark material is also found in the HED meteorites that come from Vesta.
"Our analysis of the dark material on Vesta and comparisons with laboratory studies of HED meteorites for the first time proves directly that these meteorites are fragments from Vesta," Le Corre added.
In the case of Vesta, thanks to the HED meteorites, we have the samples first, and must try to relate them to our emerging geologic picture of Vesta from the Dawn mission," added Williams.
This crater may be the source of the HED meteorites and a population of smaller nearby inner-main-belt asteroids with similar spectra that are often referred to as Vestoids.
